Rugby proves the biggest inspiration for this week's raft of new beers.

Early launch for St George & the Dragon

Wadworth has launched its English ale, St George & the Dragon, early this year in a bid to support the English Rugby team’s bid in the RBS Six Nations this year, which kicks off on 2 February.

The brew, a 4.5% ABV “traditional” ale, isn’t usually launched until St George’s Day in April  but will this year be available from next month.

It is said to be a refreshing, biscuity beer, with has hints of orange and blackcurrant.

Try a rugby beer

Leicester brewery Everards has also unveiled its brew for the RBS Six Nations – in honour of the eight Leicester Tiger players named in the England squad.

Tighthead is a “winter warmer” of a beer made with Challenger, Saaz and Cascade hops and has “delicate roasted caramel flavours” and a sweet finish.

“Tighthead is the perfect beer for any rugby fan and is sure to be popular during the tournament,” said head brewer Graham Giblet.

Robinson’s beers for 2014

A 3.9% ABV bitter called “Hannibal’s Nectar” is the first seasonal beer of the year from Stockport-based brewer Robinsons.

The 3.9% ABV ruby ale is made with American Citra hops and is full-bodied and bitter with, “an interesting balance of biscuit malt and burnt toffee flavours.”

The brewer is also promising a beer called “Brazilian” timed to coincide with the World Cup this summer and a festive brew called “Indulgence” for Christmas.
