The Publican’s Morning Advertiser’s very own beer is on sale now
Blackbird, a 5% ABV schwartzbier, or black lager, is on sale in Brains pubs now.
It is made with Southern German lager yeast, Munich and Dark Crystal malts and Saaz, Hallertau and Cascade hops.
It is a “refreshing beer with hints of chocolate, coffee and liquorice combined with spicy hop flavours and a mellow citrus zing.”
Blackbird was brewed as part of the brewery’s Ultimate Continental Beer challenge, which invites beer writers and bloggers to develop their ultimate continental beer.
The first beer to be released from this year’s programme was Dissolution by PMA columnist Pete Brown. It is a Belgian abbey-style dubbel brewed with Munich and Dark Crystal malts, Saaz and Styrian Golding hops and a traditional Trappist Ale yeast.
At the end of the year all the beers will face a blind tasting panel of beer experts in December and the winning beer will become part of the Brains’ beer festival programme.
Last year Brains hosted the ‘Ultimate IPA’ challenge, which was won by Ben McFarland and Tom Sandham from Thinking Drinkers with Boilermaker, a Welsh whisky-infused IPA. It has since been listed in both Morrison and Tesco.
Brains craft brewery, which was launched just over a year ago and has been such a success that earlier this month the brewery announced it would be increasing capacity to meet “unprecedented” demands for its craft brews.
