Pint prices jump by 4.5%
According to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the average price of a pint of draught lager in a pub rose from £4.57 to £4.78 between June 2023 and June 2024, an increase of 4.5%.
The numbers, which are calculated by ONS using data from licensed venues across the country, estimated pint prices had seen a 0.2% uptick month-on-month, rising from £4.78 in May.
Price hikes
It marked the third biggest increase in pint prices over the past five years, the largest of which was between June 2022 and June 2023, when the cost of a pint of draught lager soared by 11.7% from £4.09 to £4.57.
The second biggest price hike was between June 2021 and June 2022, when costs increased by 5.6% from £3.87 to £4.09.
Previous data showed the cost of a pint of lager had risen by 4.6% year-on-year in both April and May this year.
Moreover, while year-on-year figures have decreased by comparison, the official figures showed draught lager prices had soared by 29.1% against pre-pandemic levels, with the cost of a pint having stood at £3.70 in June 2019.
New research
In addition, costs had rocketed by more than two-fifths (41.5%) over the past decade, rising from £3.37 in June 2014.
The cost of a pint of draught bitter in pubs also saw price increases in the year to June 2024, rising by 2.6% from £3.81 to £3.91, compared to a year-on-year uptick of 8.8% during the previous twelve-month period, when prices rose from £3.50 in June 2023.
Earlier this month, research commissioned by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) showed just one in 10 consumers said a pint in a pub was affordable.
Meanwhile last month the consumer organisation warned rising pint prices threatened to push people out of “hardworking pubs”.
