With Government and health experts seemingly pointing the finger at pubs, The Morning Advertiser analyses the number of coronavirus cases reported since the sector reopened up until 15 September.
  • In the week pubs were legally allowed to reopen, cases fell from the previous week by 1,890 to 3,622
  • The Government’s Eat Out to Help Out Scheme ran from 3 August to 31 August, and according to the PHE data, cases from 29 July to 1 September increased by 2,704
  • The biggest jump in reported cases was the week from 9 September to 15 September (cases reported were 18,660 – an increase of 5,615)

The Public Health England (PHE) surveillance report for England is data comprising of swab testing in PHE labs and NHS hospitals for those with a clinical need. It also includes data from health and care workers' swab testing for the wider population, as set out in the Government guidance.

Most schools, nurseries and universities in England were able to reopen from 1 September.

Following such reopenings, PHE data found the biggest jump in reported cases was the week from 9 September to 15 September (cases reported were 18,660 – an increase of 5,615).

The second largest increase in cases reported was the week prior – 2 September to 8 September, which saw a rise of 5,144 (to 13,045).

This was also the same time (September) Government began encouraging office workers to return to their workplaces.

In the week pubs were legally allowed to reopen, cases fell from the previous week by 1,890 to 3,622.

The cases did rise in the weeks that followed with the largest increase before September, taking place in the last week of August. During this period, cases grew by 1,430.

The Government’s Eat Out to Help Out Scheme ran from 3 August to 31 August, and according to the PHE data, cases from 29 July to 1 September increased by 2,704.
