Pubs left out of Top 100 Restaurants in the world
While there were no pubs featured on the list – which was based on the seventh annual poll of the jetset lifestyle readers of the Elite Traveler’s publication – seven restaurants mentioned were British, including one in the top 10.
These were Heston Blumenthal’s the Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire (10) and his London restaurant Dinner by Heston Blumenthal (15) in Knightsbridge, central London.
UK restaurants
Restaurant Gordon Ramsay (22) in Chelsea, south-west London also featured, along with The Ledbury (35) in Notting Hill, west London; Sat Bains (92) in Nottingham; Bibendum (97) in Chelseas, west London; and La Dame de Pic in Tower Hill, east London (100).
The USA was recognised as the best-performing country in the world with 28 restaurants making the list, while France followed with 18 being listed.
Spain had eight restaurants in the list, and Italy and the UK were joint fourth with seven winners from each making the grade.
Top spot
The number one spot was awarded to Grant Achatz’s Alinea in Chicago, USA. On receiving the award he said: “It has been a busy year, but this recognition and everything we have accomplished makes all the hard work worthwhile.”
The year’s Lifetime Achievement Award was received by French chef Daniel Boulud, who described his work in the kitchen at Daniel in New York, USA, as collaborative as opposed to an individual project based around the ethos of one chef.
“Dishes are not coming from one individual. They are coming from everybody’s collaboration together. It is a collective work. It is definitely a form of partnership, the way we are working here,” he said.
