Purity Brewing Company launches first sour beer
Maravilla Sour is a ruby red Belgian-style raspberry beer and the brewery’s first foray into the world of sour beer.
The beer is brewed with locally sourced Maravilla raspberries and Maris Otter, Oat and Crystal malts before being generously hopped with Godiva and Bullion.
Limited edition
Just 1,200 bottles of the beer have been made, and the beer has been packaged into 750ml corked Champagne-style bottles. In addition, 200 30l kegs will be available for the on-trade. The beer has an ABV of 6.5% in bottle and 5.5% in keg.
Purity describes Maravilla Sour as “deeply complex and full to the brim with crisp fruit tartness”, and recommends drinking it with braised red meats; dry, aged steaks; strong mature cheeses; and rich chocolate desserts.
Speaking about the beer, Purity managing director Paul Halsey said: “We really enjoyed creating these limited-edition beers and, over the years, we’ve had some fantastic feedback."
Premium and well balanced
Halsey continued: “Maravilla Sour is a first of its kind for us; we’ve taken only the best Belgian triple yeast, cultured lactobacillus from a local cheese producer and combined it with Herefordshire’s best raspberries to produce a truly premium, well-balanced ruby sour beer.”
The Good Beer Guide’s Brewery of The Year is also celebrating the return of its hoppy black IPA, Saddle Black, which is back for the winter in cask at an ABV of 5.8%.
In an interview with The Morning Advertiser in October, Halsey said that championing the “completely unique” experience of cask beer and focusing on “great service, great beer and great food” will help pubs survive challenging on-trade conditions.
