Mick McDonnell, chairman of Plymouth’s Best Bar None (BBN), has been appointed national coordinator of the scheme.

McDonnell has had a long and successful career running pubs, mostly in the South West, and was a founding member of the Plymouth scheme. He will start his new role at the beginning of March.

BBN is a network of schemes in cities and towns across the UK that seeks to reduce alcohol-related crime in the night time economy.

BBN chairman Robert Humphreys said: “Our national coordinator is the day-to-day leader and guide of the project - the central role in a thoroughly worthwhile organisation.

“Mick’s enthusiasm and experience admirably equip him for the task. On behalf of the Board and of our sponsors I am delighted to welcome him to the team."

McDonnell said: “I am really looking forward to getting to know the great schemes and the great people that run them, and I’ll do my very best to help them and together build and extend the reputation and reach of Best Bar None.”

Councillor Chris Penberthy, cabinet member for cooperatives, housing and community safety at Plymouth City Council, added: “Mick McDonnell has been the key driver for the success of the Best Bar None Scheme in Plymouth and has worked relentlessly since 2008 to develop and improve the scheme. He is an expert in his field and has gained much respect from all who work with him.

“I would like to wish Mick all the best in his new role and the national scheme’s gain will leave a gap in Plymouth that will be very hard to replace.”

There are 70 successful BBN schemes in place and 17 more in development.
