A Brighton pub has retained its Asset of Community Value (ACV) status despite a challenge to have it delisted.

The new owners of The Rose Hill Tavern contacted Brighton and Hove City Council expressing concern about the validity of the ACV signatories’ list, which they claimed contained the names and signatures of at least 30 people who were not registered to vote in Brighton.

However, the council concluded the ACV status of the pub should remain.

“As part of the council’s review, it was confirmed that the community body behind the nomination, Rose Hill Tavern Action Group, did have the required number of members on the Brighton & Hove electoral register, which satisfied the legal test of the body having a ‘local connection’ with Brighton & Hove,” a council spokeswoman said.

The pub was granted ACV status by the city council in May, just as a private property developer was in the process of buying the site from Enterprise Inns.

The action group was set up to raise £350,000 plus VAT to buy the property.
