The PMA's pick of the latest new beers
Discworld beer launched
Discworld author Terry Pratchett has brewed a range of ales in collaboration with Ales by Mail.
The first to be launched was Modo’s Midden, a 4.5% ABV golden ale that has a light lemon/grapefruit flavour with notes of cedar, with a “truly distinctive character,” according to MD Paul Kruzycki.
It will be available in cask and bottle until the end of August and is already available in JD Wetherspoon.
Citra Pale Ale from Robinsons
The Stockport-based Robinsons Brewery has launched the latest in its series of seasonal ales for this year.
The 3.8% ABV Citra Pale Ale is made, unsurprisingly, from American Citra hops and has a “vibrant citrus and tropical fruit character.”
Brands manager John Robinson said the brewery’s seasonal range has always been popular, and the previous brew, Brazilian, sold out.
“We are certainly hoping the same demand for Citra as it really is a perfect summer drink,” he said.
Lower ABV ale for the younger crowd
Harveys, the Sussex brewery, has launched Harveys R, a beer aimed at a younger ale drinking crowd as well as those who want to moderate their alcohol intake.
The 2.8% ABV beer was launched last week and will be a permanent addition to the range.
It is a ruby coloured beer with a “slightly hoppy aroma and a pleasant bitterness on the palate.”
“We used our own spring water and yeast strain help ensure that the brew has the distinctive Harvey character,” said a spokesman.
First World War brew
Four soldiers of the First World War will be featured on bottles of the West Berkshire Brewery’s latest ale.
Brewed to commemorate the centenary of the start of the conflict the brewery asked the local community to submit stories and pictures of relatives that had fought to feature on bottles.
The beer, Tommy Atkins Traditional Ale, is brewed to a traditional recipe to emulate a style of beer brewed during WW1 and is nut brown in colour with a gentle malt flavour.
International beer selection
Arkell’s Brewery has launched the first in a series of beers made with hops from around the world.
The International Hop Collection follows on from the success of last year’s range of beers made from English hops and features hops from Slovenia, the US, Poland and New Zealand.
The first to be launched is a 3.6% ABV ale made from the New Zealand Weimea hop, which is said to have a hint of “tangerine sweetness.”
Fund a beer
Beer sommelier Peter Haydon and start-up Crafted & Distilled are mounting a campaign to crowdfund a beer to mark the centenary of World War 1.
The limited edition nut-brown ale will be made with chestnuts and named the Fairy Feller’s Master Stroke after a painting (which depicts the “master stroke” as the final blow to open a chestnut) that was originally commissioned by Haydon’s great-great-grandfather and later gifted to the Tate by Siegfried Sassoon.
