The organisers behind British Roast Dinner Week have launched its annual campaign to find Britain’s best roast dinner.

The competition is part of British Roast Dinner Week sponsored by Unilever brands Knorr and Colman’s, which runs from 29 September to 5 October and encourages pubs to ‘boast their roast’ by putting roasts on the menu every day, rather than just Sundays.

To enter the Best British Roast Dinner competition, operators must offer a roast dinner on their menus and answer four questions about what makes their roast special. All UK operators are eligible to enter and the closing date is 22 August.

The top five finalists will be visited by mystery diners before an overall winner is chosen.

Sales boost

Last year’s competition winner, Scottish steakhouse Kyloe – based at Rutland Hotel in Edinburgh – said it experienced a three-fold increase in roast dinner volumes after claiming the title.

Judges praised Kyloe for the quality of its locally sourced meat – in particular its joint of Borders roast rib of beef, which is carved at the table – along with the high standard of its crispy duck fat roast potatoes, root vegetables and gravy.

Murray Ward, general manager at the Rutland Hotel, said winning the Best British Roast Dinner competition helped to turn Kyloe into a Sunday lunch destination venue.

As well being recognised for serving Britain’s best roast, the winner will receive up to £10,000 worth of PR coverage for their pub or restaurant, a day with a pub consultant, and a supply of Knorr Gravy and Colman's English Mustard. The runners-up will also receive a supply of Knorr and Colman’s.
