Brewery's first female signwriter reaches final of apprentice of the year awards
Sarah Bromley, who was appointed as Arkell’s Brewery’s first female signwriter when she was taken on as an apprentice last year, impressed judges in the regional ‘Somerset’ heat with a practical work piece, which saw her demonstrating her wallpapering, stencilling, and waterborne glossing skills amongst others.
The artist scooped £100 worth of Dulux Decorator Centres vouchers, a certificate and decorating materials for winning the heat. She will now compete against nine other regional finalists at Durham College on 10 and 11 June, where she will be judged on a further practical piece in her quest to lift the prestigious 2014 title and a top prize of £1,000.
Delighted
Bromley, who has A-levels in art, textiles and maths from New College, Swindon, is undertaking a two year painting and decorating apprenticeship, the closest qualification to brewery signwriting, with Arkell’s. “Sarah is helping us keep the tradition of brewery signwriting alive and we’re absolutely delighted that her work has been recognised in this way,” George Arkell, brewery director said.
Beverley Whitehead, a spokeswoman for Dulux Decorator Centres added: “The competition is now in its seventh year and once again we’ve been highly impressed by the standard and skills of the apprentices. Everyone who has competed in the regionals should be extremely proud and Sarah in particular did an amazing job and is to be congratulated.”
Bromley said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have come first and, although it was challenging, I really enjoyed the opportunity to take part. I’m now focused on the final and even though I know it will be tough, it’s just great to take part.”
The final will be followed by a presentation evening at Lumley Castle in Durham.
