An historic Fuller’s pub in Greenwich has been transformed into the “world’s first wheelchair basketball pub” for the Paralympic Games.

The Pilot, which has stood in Greenwich for 200 years, has been renamed the Wheechair Basketballer for the duration of the Games, which kicked off last week.

The majority of wheelchair basketball matches are taking place at the North Greenwich Arena, a mere 300 metres from the pub, which has held a number of events to celebrate, including a charity raffle.

“It has been great so far,” said the pub’s manager Beata Banaszak. “We are getting a lot of coverage which is very exciting and it is definitely going to bring a welcome boost for trade.

“The pub is acting as a base where people from all over the world can meet up, including the wheelchair basketballers and other Paralympians, a few of whom have already paid us a visit.”
