Pub manager retires after 27 years at the helm of the same pub
Pub manager Michael Gibson is to retire after 27 years behind the bar of Newcastle Upon Tyne pub the Old George.

Gibson first took over, as relief manager at Old George back in 1985 when the opening hours of 8am until 3pm and from 5pm until 10.30pm seemed long.

“When I look back on my time at the Old George is been a rollercoster ride. Recalling some of the stories has had me in stitches. Such as the time, many years ago, when we called on the assistance of the police to help disburse some over exuberant guys on a stag party.

"At the very moment the police arrived the song Y.M.C.A came through our outdoor sound system prompting the leading police officer to immediately ‘Do the Dance’. Everyone stopped in their tracks gobsmacked before continuing their scuffle!” said Gibson.

“I’ll certainly miss the pub there’s no doubt but I won’t miss the long hours. The Old George is in my blood and I’m sure I’ll be a regular visitor, just from now on as a customer though!” he added.

David Crow, area manager for Stonegate Pub Company, owners of the Old George said: “Many congratulations to Michael. What an incredible achievement. He is the consummate pub manager and his experience, sense of fun and dedication to the business will be missed. We wish him well in his deserved early retirement!”
