Wind power: helping save Cumbria’s Kirkstone Inn
A remote 500-year-old inn that faced closure due to crippling energy costs has installed wind turbines in a bid to remain open.

The Kirkstone Pass Inn — in the Lake District National Park — had been relying on expensive diesel generators for all electrical power, but its future was left hanging in the balance when energy bills totalled £25,000 last year.

But the Inn, which is the highest inhabited building in Cumbria, has taken advantage of its summit location by erecting three small Evance wind turbines and a battery backup system to harness the power of the wind.

“We simply had to look at alternative power sources or face inevitable closure,” said owner John Jennings. “New green technology powering an iconic historic inn is proving to be an interesting talking point at the bar.”
