500 events posted on CAMRA's Community Pubs Month website
This month’s campaign aims to increase awareness of the value of community pubs and drive footfall.
Gary Needs, of the Avon Inn in Avonwick, Devon, held a strongest man competition last weekend.
Customers flocked in to watch 10 men take part in six events, such as lifting 11-lb weights and flipping tractor tyres. Needs also adapted a quiz night to focus on beer.
Needs said: “We’re a community pub and I think what CAMRA is doing is a very good thing, drawing attention to the fact that pubs are the hub of the community. The free advertising on the campaign website has also helped because it can cost a lot to let people know what’s going on.”
The Anglers Rest in Wombwell, South Yorkshire, recently held a ‘bra bank day’. It invited women to “sort out their bra drawers and any that no longer fit, you no longer like and will never wear, please bring them along to the bra bank”, encouraging them to enjoy a drink when they popped in.
Chris Hankins, at the Brunswick Arms, Worcester, is linking the initiative with St George’s Day this weekend. He is holding a medieval banquet and a medieval-themed karaoke night.
He said: “We have 20 booked in for the banquet, as well as someone dressed in a sheet for customers to wipe their dirty hands on.
“I’m not sure how the medieval karaoke is going to work. We also have a box full of medieval clothing.”
