Head of Steam pub chain offers take-home ready meals as part of Stuff the Supermarkets campaign
A multiple operator is offering customers ready meals to take home as part of its Stuff the Supermarkets campaign, in a bid to compete with the retail giants.

The Head of Steam’s campaign has long encouraged customers to buy drinks they want to consume at home from the pub, rather than from the supermarket.

The company’s pubs in Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham and Huddersfield are offering the deal.

Managing director Tony Brookes said that supermarket deals such as starters, main courses, side dishes, desserts and bottle of wine for £9 or £10 targets pubs and restaurants.

He said: “Frankly, we’ve had enough of the supermarkets chomping away at our core drinks trade. It’s time the pub trade fought back – and restaurants need to do the same. If things carry on the way they are, supermarkets will eventually supply everything anybody wants and all other shops and businesses may as well close down.

“We just won’t lay down and take it – we’re fighting back. Our pubs have a good food trade. Nearly all our food is prepared fresh in the pub and our customers love it. So what better way to give our customers what they like than to offer it to them to be able to eat at home, if they can’t or don’t want to come out and eat in our pub, or if they want to eat when our food service has finished?”

Brookes added: “We would encourage pubs nationwide to follow our example and do their bit to stuff the supermarkets, because the supermarkets are doing their best, with irresponsible alcohol price promotions, to stuff the pubs. This is war. And you’ve got to be in it to win it.”
