Licensee bids for PICAS panel vice-chairman role
He declared his interest in the role in the same week that the service — which is the new organisation responsible for handling all disputes over codes of practice — was launched.
Mountford, who has been involved in a high-profile spat with Punch over his rent-review terms, wrote a letter to the Pubs Independent Rent Review Scheme (PIRRS) board chairman Bernard Brindley.
He put his case forward to be the vice-chairman to Rodger Vickers, who was appointed PICAS chairman last month.
In the letter, he said: “I remember the Government making clear that it was important that the position be held by someone “close to the IPC [Independent Pub Confederation]” and have the ability to view issues impartially and with an open mind to all aspects of the complaint.
“I would, therefore, like to put myself forward for the position as I feel I have the necessary qualities to fill this crucial role.”
He added: “I accept it is vital that the position is filled by an individual who has an instant grasp of the situation and a strong understanding of the constraints that companies like Punch and Enterprise are under. It is for this reason that I am asking that you give this letter your utmost deliberation.”
Brindley has responded to the letter, admitting that someone has already been approached.
He said: “Thanks for your letter and also for putting yourself forward for the position as vice-chairman of PICAS. We are currently having discussions with another person for this position. However, there is a meeting of the PIRRS board on 8 March and I will make your intentions known.”
A spokesman for the IPC said: “If Dave Mountford was considered a candidate the IPC would be very pleased with his appointment.”
Bill Sharp, of the Guild of Master Victuallers, said: “I can’t think of anyone better for the job.”
