A Northamptonshire landlord has been named this year's Everards Tiger Local Hero winner after coming top of an online poll conducted by the Leicestershire-based brewery and pub operator.

Cliff Morton, co-owner at the Knight's Lodge pub, in Corby, was recognised for the thousands of pounds he raised for charity through a combined passion for Liverpool football club and helping others.

The popular candidate received votes from across the UK including one from Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish's daughter Lindsay.

Morton said: "I am bit shocked to win, as looking at the list of nominees there seemed to be a lot of people worthy of winning the Tiger Local Hero award.

"It's wonderful to have been named as the winner and although I am entitled to part of the prize money for myself I have decided to donate it all my favourite charities which are linked to Liverpool football club. I think it's important to do that as at the end of the day I only do what I do to support these wonderful causes and to help people out."

Stephen Gould, Everards managing director, said: "We want to recognise the efforts of those unsung heroes who make a positive difference in their local communities and pubs are an ideal hunting ground for unearthing such heroic achievers.

"Once again this year's Tiger Local Hero is a worthy winner whose fundraising efforts and generous nature has marked him out as a true local hero in his community. We applaud Cliff Morton and all those other nominees for their selfless attitudes and sterling community spirit and work."

The Tiger Local Hero campaign is dedicated to honouring and rewarding individuals whose contribution and support to local causes marks them out as Local Heroes in the areas in which they live.
