Luminar Leisure has come under fire for an irresponsible promotion that claims to "specialise" in getting its customers drunk.

A flyer for Liquid & Envy in Newcastle promotes drunkenness and associated behaviour, which is banned under the mandatory code brought in by the Labour Government last year.

The flyer states: "We specialise in getting you drunk, dancing and singing, laughing and joking, drunken dancing, singing and laughing... and possibly waking your neighbours up on the way home with your drunken singing!"

The flyer is advertising Thursday "Good Times" at the club, when it hosts a variety of events under the name Fuzzy Logic. Tickets are £4.50 online or £6 on the door and drinks are priced at 60p all night with a few exceptions.

Luminar has since stopped running the promo and is in discussions with Newcastle City Council to "ensure similar flyers will not be used in future". However, it is continuing to charge the same entry fee and 60p for drinks on Thursdays.

A spokesman for Luminar Leisure said: "The Liquid & Envy in Newcastle entered into a two 'session' arrangement with a private promoter. As a responsible late-night operator, the contract Luminar puts in place when it works with a promoter includes having approval of all promotional material, this is to ensure it meets with the relevant legislation and Luminar's high standards.

"In this instance, one of the flyers wasn't shown to Luminar and it contained terminology that wasn't appropriate. When it was brought to our attention, the club arranged for all copies to be removed from circulation immediately. Liquid Newcastle will not be working with this promoter again."

The Publican's Morning Advertiser's legal expert Peter Coulson said the council has approached the matter in a light-handed way, and said the trade can expect more lenient treatment as the coalition distances itself from the previous Government's mandatory code.

"That is an irresponsible promotion without a doubt," he said. "It is in breach of mandatory conditions against irresponsible promotions that suggest drunkenness or disorder. Mandatory conditions are still in effect for all premises."
