Licensee Anthony Youel wanted to highlight the true meaning of Easter — so he tied himself to a 13-foot wooden cross outside his pub, the Monkey in Thurgoland, South Yorkshire.

According to a report in local newspaper The Star, the 49-year-old married father of two said he wanted to draw attention to the real Easter message.

"I've been getting funny looks all my life — it doesn't worry me,'' he said, during a 'crucifixion' dress rehearsal in front of his pub.

"This is certainly nothing to do with promoting my pub or making money.

"If I was driven by money I wouldn't still be here in the pub game.

"I've been a Christian all my life and I love Jesus. I thought it was a poignant time to do this."
