Pubs and off-licences in Newquay have agreed to adopt a Challenge-25 policy ahead of the expected summer invasion of youngsters.

The move is part of continued action following two alcohol related deaths in 2009 in Newquay.

The town has reduced alcohol related rowdy behaviour by 22%, anti-social behaviour by 19% and theft by 15% in the past year.

"We aren't here to ruin people's holiday but we have a job to do and we will do it to the best of our ability," said Lyndon Harrison, chairman of the Newquay Association of Licensed Premises.

"Our door staff do a great job making sure that people entering their premises are over 18 by challenging anyone lucky enough to look under 25 and turning away anyone under age.

"Equally our off licence shops make sure people are 18 or over before they sell alcohol to them."

Police will also be on the lookout for fake or false IDs. "We are training all door staff and off licence staff in Newquay to spot false ID and this summer anyone using a forged driving licence is liable to be arrested and leave Newquay with a criminal record," said Inspector Ian Drummond-Smith.

"Our message to anyone under 18 visiting Newquay this summer is 'Save your money and your reputation: Don't bring false ID - we are on to you!' "
