An award-winning vegetarian pub has scooped an award from an animal rights group.

The pub was named in the top 10 vegetarian-friendly pubs in the UK by animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Greene King tenancy the Red Lion in Great Bricett, Suffolk, was set up by licensee Jan Wise three years ago as an exclusively vegetarian venue.

It has also won the Vegetarian Society award and placed in the Times Online top 10 vegetarian restaurants.

The menu includes caramelised onion and goats cheese filo parcels; baked ratatouille and mozzarella pasta with garlic ciabatta; and roasted mushroom wellington with a white wine sauce.

Judges considered the pub's reputation and the selection and quality of vegetarian items on the menu in choosing the top 10.

Wise said only around 25% of her customers are actually vegetarian. "People come in with a vegetarian in their party or just because they have heard about the pub's reputation," she said.

"It is fantastic to win this award."
