The Harp in Covent Garden is the first London pub to win the coveted Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) National Pub of the Year competition.

The pub is run by celebrated real-ale pioneer Bridget Walsh, who has been winning CAMRA awards since the 1970s. Walsh took on the tenancy in 1995 and bought the freehold from Punch in 2010. She serves eight real ales and sells several ciders and perries.

CAMRA pubs director Julian Hough said: "The most impressive aspect of the Harp is it retains its appeal as a true local, even though it's in the heart of London."

Walsh said: "We pride ourselves on the range and quality of our real ale and to be London's first National Pub of the Year is a real honour."

Criteria include atmosphere, décor, service, value for money and beer quality.

Runners-up were the Taps in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire; the Beacon Hotel in Sedgley, West Midlands, and the Salutation Inn, in Ham, Gloucestershire.
