Nightclubs are dying as hard-up revellers choose late-night pubs instead. Six venues are closing a week, with the slump and changing tastes leaving dancefloors empty. A total of 355 nightspots shut in the last year - 13 per cent of the country's 2,722. Casualties include Matter at London's 02, frequented by Paris Hilton and Kelly Osbourne, and the Buddha Bar on the capital's Embankment. Manchester City fans revel in their team being the world's richest club. Now they can boast they also own the world's richest pub. For the club has paid around £100,000 to snap up former Blues legend Mike ¬Summerbee's run-down boozer in the shadow of its Eastlands stadium. The pub is called The Maine Road after City's former home before their controversial move to rent the 47,726-seater former Commonwealth Games stadium from Manchester City Council. - Daily Star

One of York's busiest shopping squares was closed off by police on Saturday morning after violence erupted among about 50 football fans. Police cordoned off St Helen's Square as violence broke out among Hull City fans, who were in the city for a pre-season friendly against York City.
