Illicit alcohol seized from pubs
Licensees have been warned to look out for lower-priced alcohol after more than 400 counterfeit and illicit bottles were confiscated from pubs in Lancashire.
Salford Trading Standards seized 436 bottles from 25 pubs and off licences in the town, out of 75 that were raided over a five-day crackdown.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned that counterfeit alcohol has not been through safety checks and can cause serious health problems including blindness.
The FSA advised Salford Trading Standards of the problem and allocated £24,065 to help fund the raid.
"I am delighted that our close work and financial assistance has helped Salford Trading Standards seize this illicit alcohol," said FSA head of enforcement Sarah Appleby.
"The FSA is determined to stamp out food fraud so that consumers are not misled, and we are working very closely with local authorities to achieve this."
