Shot Cumbria licensee is 'improving'
A Cumbria licensee shot by crazed gunman Derrick Bird is improving but remains in hospital.
Harry Berger, host at the Woolpack in Eskdale, was shot in the shoulder by Bird while he sat in his car at Seascale. He had to wait 90 minutes for help to arrive, and was then airlifted to hospital in Carlisle.
Bird went on the rampage in Cumbria last week, killing 12 people and injuring 11 others before taking his own life.
Surgeons have already operated on Berger, and he remains in hospital awaiting a second operation.
Alan Snape, staff member at the Woolpack, said Berger's condition is "improving now, but he's still in hospital".
The Bergers recently took on the Woolpack, having previously operated the nearby Boot Inn. The pub's website states it is currently getting a "face, food and beer lift" as well as going green.
There are six ensuite rooms available at the pub, and the couple also own the 12-bedroom Bed & Breakfast Stanley House, one mile away.
