The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has released 23-step guidance to help pubs operate smoothly throughout the World Cup.

The guidance, issued with local government co-ordinator LACORS, includes:

• Make sure the DPS or duty manager is on duty

• Ensure sufficient staff are present

• Discuss events with staff and address local police concerns

• Consider use of doormen

• Consider use of tickets to control admission

• Consider restricting number of entrances

• Consider use of plastic glassware

• Ensure that empty glasses are collected regularly

• Ensure you are complying with all licence requirements

• Stay vigilant for underage drinkers

• Ensure CCTV is fully operational

• Monitor and control smoking areas

• Pass on any concerns or reports of disorder to local police

• Make sure that there is no excessive consumption of alcohol

• If there is trouble, call the police and close the bar

• Be ready to refuse entry if capacity is reached

• Check all fire exits are clear

• Remember you must provide tap water

• Make sure that the front doors can be secured at any stage

• Contact licensing officers for information on local requirements

The BBPA also recommends pubs carry out risk assessments and notify their police and council of their World Cup plans.

"This guidance is a helpful checklist to run through just to ensure all the angles are covered," said BBPA director of pubs Martin Rawlings.

"This festival of football promises to be a great national event. We would like to see Government, police and local authorities backing the pub as the best and safest place to enjoy the tournament."
