A West Midlands licensee is hoping to open five more pubs in as many years despite the difficult trading conditions.

Balwinder Thukral has built up a small estate of four freeholds since 2002 — the Palms, the Gosford Arms and the Courtyard in Coventry and the Motor Hotel in Radford.

"It was difficult in 2002 but it's getting worse," said Thukral. "Now we have to compete with everybody. the supermarkets are cutting their prices and, with the smoking ban, people are staying at home and drinking cheap beer.

"We are growing but are struggling to make a good profit."

Thukral said inflation, increasing business rates and alcohol tax all have an impact on the pubs' ability to make a profit, but says the rates rises are "understandable".

"It is my business and my responsibility," he said. "I cant blame anyone else if my business goes down."

Thukral believes he does have an advantage over tied pubs, as he receives good discounts from breweries and has the choice to shop around.

He remains optimistic that his business will grow sufficiently over the next few years to achieve his expansion goal.
