The Royal Albion in Broadstairs, Kent has been crowned Shepherd Neame Pub of the Year, following a £1m refurbishment.

The hotel — a former favourite with Charles Dickens — is managed by Shane and Marie Godwin and includes 21 en-suite bedrooms, a coffee lounge, bar, terrace and the creation of a new dining room.

"It's been a challenging 12 months with lots of changes but the support from the brewery has been fantastic and the hard work has all been worth it," said Shane Dodwin. "We couldn't have done it without our committed staff and we're looking forward to the next year."

The Betsy Trotwood in London was named Tenanted Pub of the Year with licensees Scott Baker and Richard Cobbing being praised for developing a highly successful food, drink and entertainment venue.

The George in Cranbrook was named Managed Business of the Year after Martin Lyall oversaw refurbishments to the bar and reception area and the increased popularity in its accommodation, which featured in Alistair Sawday's prestigious guide.

Tim and Wendy Mannion of Ye Olde Whyte Lion in Locksbottom added Managers of the Year to their collection of awards for their charity work, freshly prepared food and the creation of a highly popular garden area.

Other awards went to:

• Heart of the Community: Walnut Tree in East Farleigh

• Pub Food of the Year: Pepper Box in Ulcombe

• Pub Restaurant Award: Dove in Dargate

• Chef of the Year: Alan Skinner, New Flying Horse in Wye

• Perfect Pint: Adelaide in Teddington

• New Licensee of the Year: Simon Maltby of the Bull Inn, Newick

Jonathan Neame, Shepherd Neame chief executive, said: "From delicious food and expertly-served ales and lagers, to tireless charity work and entertainment, these award-winners are a credit to their customers and to Shepherd Neame."
