Chelmsford Licensed Victuallers Association (LVA) last week met with Conservative MP Simon Burns to discuss mounting pressures in the trade.

The MP for West Chelmsford suggested that his party would target supermarket loss leaders and high-alcohol products.

He also promised a detailed review of the Licensing Act.

Burns was against doorstaff having powers to issue fixed penalties and said the "monopoly" of football screening rights is unfair.

"Whilst he couldn't offer any specific help, we found him to be approachable, sympathetic, and realistic," said LVA treasurer Steve Seager.

"He fully understood our current plight and shared our concern at the diminishing number of public houses in Chelmsford and the surrounding area."
