The Gambling Commission has warned pubs that it is illegal to allow commercial betting on their premises.

The government body has issued the warning in the run up to the biggest horse racing event of the year - the Grand National, which is due to take place tomorrow.

In recent months the Commission, along with the police, has found evidence of commercial betting at pubs in Hertfordshire, York and Hull.

Richard Ingram, the Commission's national compliance manager for betting said: "The Commission's role is to work with local authorities and the police to ensure gambling is kept fair and safe for all."

Licensees that allow illegal betting can be jailed for up to 51 weeks or fined £5,000.
