People from Swansea are the UK's stingiest tippers, with just 18% regularly leaving a tip after a meal out.

The study of 1,925 people by discount website www.MyVoucherCodes.co.uk found that Leeds is the most generous city with 65% of respondents regularly tipping for good service.

The average tip across Britain is just £1.50 despite the average restaurant spend for two people standing between £25 and £30.

Just 8% of people tipped the traditional 10% and only 63% of respondents said they were happy to tip.

Edinburgh was revealed as the second stingiest city with just 19% of respondents being happy to tip and Coventry came third with 22%.

Reasons not to tip included the imposed service charge used by many restaurants, the desire to keep the meal cheap and the notion that waiting staff are adequately paid through their wages.

"Incidentally, some of our biggest traffic to MyVoucherCodes comes from these cities, meaning that despite the fact people from these areas may seem stingy, it may just be their frugality and discount-savviness being misunderstood," said managing director of MyVoucherCodes Mark Pearson.
