Brulines seeks Weights & Measures clarification
Beer flow monitoring company Brulines is to seek clarification over what other protocols it must follow in regard to calibration of equipment.
On Friday, Pubs Minister John Healey called for all equipment to be officially calibrated as part of his 12-point support plan for pubs.
"We will push for the industry to regularise equipment which measures beer flow (Brulines)," he said.
"Government will make clear our view that the industry should voluntarily ensure that all such measuring equipment is calibrated by the National Weights and Measurement Laboratory (NWML) with the backstop that failure to do so will result in Government prescribing the equipment to ensure fairness."
But Brulines said that evidence supplied to the Business Innovation and Skills Committee by its manufacturer Titan Enterprises had showed that Brulines equipment is "highly accurate and reliable at measuring liquid flow to a high degree of repeatability over a sustained period of time".
It added: "The high performance of the flow-meter has allowed it to be used in Weights and Measures approved drink dispensing systems.
"Brulines always calibrates each flow-meter in situ under the same conditions as the beer is dispensed in line.
"This is carried out using a calibrated measuring vessel produced by a specialist manufacturer and calibrated to the highest accuracy levels by a statutory Weights and Measures Authority."
It said it would now seek clarification from the NWML over what other protocols are required.
"Brulines looks forward to working with the NWML to fulfil any future requirements or changes in procedure, as we have already done voluntarily with Trading Standards."
