Pro darts player hosts pub night
Popular professional darts player Wayne Mardle dropped into the Prince of Wales pub in Moseley, Birmingham this week to host a darts night.
The pub was chosen by Wells and Young's for the Mardle evening through a competition of pubs that carry the company's ale.
Licensees Keith and Diane Marsden invested in a dart board for the Punch pub about a year ago and introduced a regular Monday darts night recently.
"Darts has really taken off in the pub, and our night with Wayne was a great evening," said Keith Marsden.
Nicknamed Hawaii 5-0-1, Mardle arrived at the pub in the afternoon for a game of darts with Keith Marsden that was televised live on central news at 6pm. He went on to have 16 games with customers and give well-advised tips.
"We were much busier than usual. The broadcast really helped bring people in plus we do a monthly newsletter drop-off at 4,000 houses in the area as well as in-house posters," said Marsden.
Takings were up by about £500 and Marsden hopes to bring Mardle back for the pub's festival of darts in July.
"For a community pub to work, you have to be the best in the area," said Marsden. "It is so important to differentiate yourself from your competitors.
