£33k racing win funds new pub project
A pub operator has opened a second site after winning £33,000 at the races.
Former gastropub the Millstream in Marden, Wiltshire, has reopened as a traditional local pub called the Triple Crown.
Local business partners Howard Spooner and Guy Sangster took on the lease of the Wadworth pub for an undisclosed amount after Spooner won £33,000 on horse racing.
An internal refurbishment took more than two months and went over budget. Oak partitions were installed to close off a child's play area, which included bean bags, games and a TV, in addition to a 40-cover restaurant and a 25-cover bar area.
The menu is focused on traditional British food such as steak & ale pie and bangers & mash, with Wadworth real ale featuring at the bar. A starter, main meal and glass of wine costs around £20.
"We listen to what villagers want and try to provide it," said Sangster. "They want a traditional pub full of friendly faces that serves affordable, not-too-fancy food.
"We haven't thought about special events yet, but we'll consider any suggestions. 'Yes' is the pub motto — what's the question?"
The Triple Crown had 300 guests at its launch last week after a leaflet drop-off in the village. "It is going really well so far," said Sangster, who sees the pub operating on a 50:50 wet dry split.
It is the pair's second venture after they restored and reopened Outside Chance at Manton, also in Wiltshire, 18 months ago. The partners are not involved with the day-to-day running of the pubs, but regularly check with the appointed managers that things are running smoothly.
There aren't any plans to take on more pubs yet.
"We haven't ruled it out, but we want to get through this period of uncertainty first," said Sangster.
