The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) has appointed Andy Tighe as its new director of brewing.

Tighe, who taks up the role this week, succeeds Dr David Long who is retiring after 29 years with the BBPA but will continue to work with Tighe over the next few months to ensure a smooth handover.

Tighe joined the BBPA in 1998 and moves from his current post of deputy director where he played a key role in formulating the BBPA's policy on taxation and leading on beer duty operations and supply chain issues.

He also managed the UK brewing industry's Climate Change Agreement.

"Andy will be a key addition to our senior management team and I am delighted to welcome him to this new role," said BBPA chief executive Brigid Simmonds.

"He has a huge knowledge of the workings of the brewing industry, and already has a proven track record.

"He will be a key advocate for the whole sector across the huge range of vital brewing issues that we manage on behalf of members, not least of which is the ongoing debate on tax, where his knowledge and expertise will be crucial."

Simmonds also paid tribute to Long. "I would also like to express my thanks to David Long.

"David has been director of brewing at the BBPA since 1995.

"He has made a huge contribution to the sector, and will be very much missed by the many who have worked closely with him. We wish him well."
