The 10 former Jongleurs comedy clubs are to be relaunched from 8 January as entertainment venues under new name Highlights, owner Intertain has announced.

It will include regular stand-up comedy with new shows under the Famous for Comedy banner, along with live music, cabaret, sport and film.

It came after the rights to the Jongleurs name reverted to its original owners following the pre-pack administration of Regent Inns, now trades as Intertain.

Intertain chief executive John Leslie said: "By focusing on entertainment we aim to create a clear divide between Intertain venues and other operators on the high street. We want to give people new reasons to get off their sofas and into our venues.

"Entertainment also provides a platform from which we can shape a customer service experience that in itself will bring more people into our venues.

"Although comedy will remain our main focus, the versatility of the 'highlight' venues will enable us to host all genres of entertainment and implement our strategic vision.

"The launch of 'Famous for Comedy' will rejuvenate comedy on the high street, guaranteeing customers the funniest night out they've had in ages.

"It will secure thousands of gigs for the best comedy talent in the UK, encourage cutting edge acts and promote creative freedom. There has never been a more exciting time for stand-up comedy in the UK."

The company also revealed it's in discussions with the broadcaster Comedy Central to explore possible link ups.

Famous for Comedy will be launch at Highlight bars on Friday 8th January with a special benefit gig for the Army Benevolent Fund.
