CAMRA backs Guy Ritchie's pub in noise row
The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has voiced its support for Guy Ritchie's Mayfair pub in its noise row with Westminster Council.
Westminster Council is to consider whether to revoke the Punchbowl's licence on 10 December after it received two noise complaints.
However, CAMRA has urged the council to consider the community value of the Punchbowl.
"What I observed whilst at this great pub was not a den of sin and corruption, but a neighbourhood local where ordinary people had gathered for a drink after work," said Kim Martin, CAMRA Greater London regional director.
"This is a local amenity, and the exact type of pub CAMRA has campaigned tirelessly for almost 40 years to preserve.
"While we are in no way saying that the Council should take the complaints made against the pub lightly, we would like to reinforce that the pub has taken reasonable steps to control noise levels, namely in employing door staff and ensuring customers are inside the pub by 9pm.
She added: "Pubs are closing at a rapid rate across the UK, with some shutting their doors blaming high Government taxation, unfair supermarket competition, increased regulatory burdens, and shifting consumer trends, so for a pub to be lost under these circumstances would be heartbreaking.
"CAMRA will be stepping up its efforts to lobby Westminster City Council in regard to the future of the Punch Bowl, but hope in the meantime the pub can communicate with the complainants to resolve this issue."
