"Carnage, the company that organises college pub crawls, is facing a massive backlash from student unions, MPs and the police over the behaviour of some of participants. The company organises huge pubs crawls for first-year university students, who for a one-off fee gain entry to a number of clubs and bars offering cheap drinks promotions. On one such jaunt last month undergraduate Philip Laing urinated over a poppy-decked war memorial. Laing is facing a jail sentence. Carnage, which insists it doesn't encourage irresponsible drinking, is set to host similar events this week in including Bath, Lincoln, Swansea and York. So alarmed are the student unions in those cities that they have threatened to withdraw their endorsement from any bar that agrees to take part." - Observer

"A son took his mum on a pub crawl - and they both got arrested in a bust-up. A court heard that CS gas spray had to be used to detain the son after glasses were hurled in the fracas. Martin Dent, 29, was jailed for nine months for affray but released due to time on remand, while mum Amanda, 47, was given a two-month suspended sentence. The pair have now been barred for a year from six pubs in Lincoln." - The Mirror

"A pub customer disarmed a gangster gunman despite being shot four times, a court heard. Winston Anglin, 47, was hit in the belly, shoulder and back. The last bullet ricocheted off his belt. The 'wholly innocent' bystander still wrestled the gun free from Ricardo Davie, 18, who was found guilty with Jason Purkiss, 31, of attempted murder at Birmingham crown court. The pair, of the Raiders crew from West Bromwich, hit the Waggon & Horses in Wolverhampton after a friend was 'disrespected'." - The Mirror
