Nearly half of all Brits (47%) are put off returning to eat at a restaurant or pub if the service charge is automatically added to the bill.

A new survey by Livebookings revealed that 22% are put off by being billed for bread they didn't ask for and 31% by only being able to book at limited times — for example at 7pm or 9pm.

However, 38% said they have not cut back on eating out but they are choosing to spend more wisely with 10% now visiting less expensive restaurants. Over half (56%) are fans of special discounted offers.

Waiters also seem to be getting a raw deal with 22% of those surveyed admitting they are more likely to moan about poor service due to the economic downturn. Most people (45%) still prefer to book a table over the phone, rather than online (16%).

"Whilst I can accept that the top tier restaurants to include additions such as service charges to the bill, you don't expect your local chains or independents to do the same," said restaurant critic Andy Hayler.

"Customer discretion is key and we are within our rights as customers to expect that tips be earned and not taken for granted."

David Norris, chief operating officer for Livebookings added: "It seems an increasing number of restaurants have been adopting customer service ideas traditionally found in the best and most expensive venues.

"From the results of our research, many of these changes such as service charges and limited-time booking slots have not been met with universal approval.

"We encourage restaurants to start collating customer feedback and contact details using an online database, meaning they're able to make any significant changes safe in the knowledge that their diners will approve.

"It will also enable them to send customers special offers so they can keep their dining room busy."
