The best pub bangers in the business have fought it out, but there could only be one winner.

Kevin Berkins, owner of the Fence Gate Inn in Fence and the Eagle in Barrow, Lancashire, has won the Best Pub Pork Sausage Award for the second year running.

Berkins, who also won back in 2006, took the title awarded by BPEX in association with The Publican at the Foodservice Sausage Awards 2009, with his Gloucestershire Old Spot, white truffle and parsley sausage.

"I'm delighted," said Berkin who also came third in the Best Innovative Pork Sausage category with a woodland mushroom, white wine and tarragon sausage. "We are always working on new varieties and to be recognised for the quality of what we do is very satisfying."

Matt and Jannine Clarke from the Holly Bush in Church Broughton, Derbyshire, were awarded second place at the ceremony which took place today at Butchers Hall in London. Their outdoor reared pork and wild nettle sausage also came second in the 2007 awards.

In third place was Mark Etherington of Brian Etherington Meat Company in Scorrier, Cornwall, with a pork, Tribute and thyme sausage.

Tony Goodger, BPEX foodservice trade manager, said: "The Best Pub Pork Sausage category was highly contested with many superb quality entries and innovative flavour combinations.

"Sausages continue to play an important role on pub menus and are a clear favourite with diners of all ages. In the run up to British Sausage Week, this competition puts those quality pub sausages firmly on the map."
