BII boss: we're not sitting on the fence
The BII is not sitting on the fence despite being the only group in support of both industry agreements.
The BII has signed up to the British Beer and Pub Association's Framework Code of Practice on the Granting of Tenancies and Leases and has voiced its support for the Independent Pub Confederation (IPC).
Although, the BII has stressed it has not signed up to the IPC manifesto. "We have agreed with BBPA and Federation of Licensed Victuallers Associations a package of measures that will benefit new and existing licensees, plus enhanced accreditation and monitoring of individual pubco codes of practice," said Robertson.
"So, we will be reporting publicly on how this agreement is to be implemented.
"We were not able to sign the IPC's manifesto document but we do welcome the organisation's creation and the focus it will bring. Where it's appropriate for us to do so, we will support its activities.
"For example, we have no position on the issue of the beer tie but do believe there is scope for improving rent setting guidelines.
"We will also take a lead role in campaigning on common issues such as health, anti-social behaviour and mandatory conditions."
He added: "As the professional body for the industry, it is right that we comment on issues of training and standards, criticising and challenging poor standards, and supporting positive developments where they exist.
"So, when pubcos make commitments to improve we must support them — equally if tenant/lessee groups wish to challenge obvious poor standards then we must support that activity too.
"This is not sitting on the fence; it's a matter of doing our job. What is new is the enhanced monitoring of pubco codes. This will help bring clarity and, crucially, visibility to the process."
A detailed Q&A on the new agreements will be issued to BII members soon.
