Insights into schemes to make pubs safer will be offered by key players who are confirmed as speakers at the 2009 Responsible Drinks Retailing conference.

Best Bar None chief executive Neil Robertson will explain how schemes raise standards at pubs and discusses the future of the initiatives. He will be joined by Chris Bulaitis of Ever So Sensible Bars, who will report on how Nottingham's Business Improvement District, promoted by the licensed retail sector, has worked.

And an insight into Project 10 — the unique partnership between the industry and Government to get across a sensible drinking message — will be provided by Bruce Ray, director of external affairs at Bacardi Brown-Forman.

Meanwhile, the subjects of the three break-out groups run by the event sponsors have been confirmed.

Diageo's session will examine whether minimum pricing is the answer to tackling alcohol misuse and alcohol related crime.

The BII's focus will be: "Can education nip binge drinking in the bud?". It will unveil initial findings of the impact of its ground-breaking Certificate in Alcohol Awareness, which aims to foster a responsible attitude among young people.

JD Wetherspoon will be examining the future of alcohol legislation in the UK in its break-out group.

Other speakers already confirmed include Oldham councillor Mark Alcock, chief constable Mike Craik of the Association of Chief Police Officers and Luminar boss Steve Thomas.

Nick Grant of Sainsbury's, PASS chairman Robert Humphreys, Noctis executive director Paul Smith and National Pubwatch chairman Steve Baker will also give presentations.

RDR 2009, run by the MA and sister title Off Licence News, takes place at the Sheraton Park Lane in London on 12 November.

RDR Awards will follow the conference in the afternoon — tickets at www.responsible drinksretailing.co.uk.
