Student bars 34p a pint cheaper than pubs
The average pint at university bars costs £2.19 — 6p more than last year but 34p less than at nearby student-focused pubs.
That's according to a survey of 140 British universities by online student guide push.co.uk, which also measured the price against the cheapest pints at pubs that cater for students. The cheapest pints are in Hull (£1.23), Buckingham (£1.31) and Bradford (£1.37).
The most expensive are at specialist institutions in the south: the University of the Arts in London and the Kent and Surrey-based University College for the creative Arts top the list on £3.16, followed by St George's Hospital Medical School, also in London, on £3.15.
The survey also lists the composite price of a drink when three are ordered — a pint of beer, glass of wine and an orange juice. Liverpool John Moores is the cheapest, at £1.39, with London's School of Pharmacy the most expensive on £3.39.
But Push editor Johnny Rich said pubs near universities shouldn't just look to price to attract students.
"Yes, licensees need to think about price, but they also need to look at what might appeal to groups of students — don't see them as a homogenous mass. There's no one activity that might attract students; it might be poetry readings for some, it could be band night or comedy nights for others."
