Pubs and bars are offering to double customers' rounds if they win a coin toss.

A number of venues have implemented a version of the promotion, it has emerged, as the trading environment gets more challenging.

Inventive Leisure advertises the deal at two of its Revolution bars. The Liverpool venue has a promotion called "Tossers" on Wednesday, "an inventive night where you order a drink, call heads or tails and if you win you get your round again for free". A similar deal runs on Tuedays in Sheffield.

The Royal Sovereign, a traditional freehouse pub in Brighton's Preston Street, also runs the offer as "coin flip Sunday" from 7pm. Manager Tim Paget said: "It definitely doesn't promote any kind of bingeing. It's very responsible. We've never had any trouble because of it.

"It means the next drink is on the house rather than just ladening people with drinks in one go."

He said it's difficult to know if the deal specifically has encouraged more trade because it combines with other events such as poker.

Meanwhile, ETM Group's Hat and Tun in Clerkenwell, London, runs a "toss the barman" promotion from 3pm to 6pm on Wednesdays. The venue's website explains how it works: "Order your drinks at the bar and roll the dice on the bar: roll double six and get your drinks for free! Roll odd and get your drinks for half price. Roll an even

number and pay normal price. A no lose situation."
