Lancaster-based pub operator Mitchells is to open a new seafront pub and leisure complex devoted to locally-born comedian Eric Morecambe.

The themed pub and visitors' centre will be located in the former Flying Dutchman, situated opposite the Morecambe seafront statue of the comic genius. The company has purchased the freehold of the building and hopes to get the new venture open by next Easter.

Mitchells is in discussion with the family of the late comedian to finalise plans. "A few things have still to be sorted out, but we are now well on the way to completing the details," said Mitchells joint managing director Andrew Barker.

"The building will house a traditional pub and restaurant area and the visitors' centre will include an inter-active section. Among the features will be a facility for visitors to download footage of classic BBC Morecambe and Wise shows besides other archive film."

Barker said the venture was ambitious but the attraction of Eric Morecambe had been underpinned by the immense popularity of the comedian's statue in the Lancashire town. Mitchells say the scheme could be partly funded by regeneration cash to revitalise the town now being spent as an ongoing investment to re-vitalise Morecambe and its tourist industry.

"We are confident this is a scheme which will be very successful and add to Morecambe's visitor attractions," Barker added.
