Pub customers battled it out in the first ever UK Rock Paper Scissors Championships last week.

The event was held at Wetherspoons pub the Imperial in Exeter with 22-year-old Nick Hemley from Woking in Surrey coming out on top.

He said: "I didn't have any tactics for the contest. I just prepared with plenty of beer and then bamboozled my opponents with some very brave gambits!"

He picked up a £100 first prize and vouchers for a meal for four people at the pub.

A charity 'winner stays on challenge', to find the person with the longest unbeaten run, also helped raise £96 for CLIC Sargent.

Sally Raynes from event organisers Wacky Nation said: "There was a great atmosphere and everyone really got behind each competitor. We had contestants dressed in diving gear, wacky wigs and caped crusaders, it was a lot of fun."

The game is played with competitors representing the three elements of rock, paper and scissors with hand signals. These hand signals are delivered simultaneously by the players with rock beating scissors, scissors winning against paper and paper beating rock.
