Director of brewing at the British Beer and Pub Association, David Long, has been appointed as interim chief executive.

Rob Hayward left the trade body yesterday with immediate effect and the search has begun to find a successor.

It is likely that BBPA chairman Michael Turner will now represent the BBPA at its crunch meeting with Alistair Darling on 16 March ahead of the Budget.

Hayward left after 10 years in charge of the BBPA. A spokesman said: "During his time as chief executive of the BBPA, both the Association and its membership have been through an unprecedented period of change and Rob has played a significant part in both the internal development of the BBPA and its relationship with Government and other key stakeholders.

"The BBPA have agreed to release Rob with immediate effect, though he will be assisting in the transition process until his replacement is identified.

"The BBPA would like to place on record their thanks for his contribution to the success of the Association and wish him well as he embarks upon this new challenge."
