Quiz prize is a Punch pub
A Punch Taverns pub in the West Midlands is being raffled off in a prize draw for £25 per ticket.
The leasehold of the Arbor Lights' pub in Walsall has 11 years remaining, and the pub produces profits of around £50,000 per year.
Licensee Jude Hanly said she decided to raffle the pub after it failed to sell via the conventional route. It had been on the market at £340,000.
Now she hopes to sell over 20,000 tickets — raising a total of £500,000 from the draw.
But she added, "if everything goes well, we hope to make around £360,000. We will donate £1 from every ticket to Macmillan Cancer Support.
"The running costs are quite high and the Gambling Commission rules are strict. The competition is not something that you can set up yourself."
Entrants must answer the following three questions correctly to be in with a chance of winning:
• Legally, under food hygiene regulations, at what temperature (in degrees Celsius) must hot food must be kept?
• How many 25ml shots will you get out of 17 x 70cl spirit bottles?
• Where specifically are the Walsall Illuminations held every year in Walsall?
Once the winner is announced, on 14 August, Hanly and her husband will arrange for the new lessees to attend Punch's business course, as well as staying at the pub to mentor the winner for one month.
Welsh licensees Steve and Christie Goymer are also set to hold a quiz to sell off their freehold pub — the Plash Inn at Llanfallteg, near Whitland.
Tickets to enter the quiz cost £20 and they are looking for 30,000 entrants.
