Pub tackles recession with hats and handbags
A Liverpool pub has stepped up its efforts to beat the crunch by launching a hats and handbag evening to attract more female customers.
Laura King, manager of the Lady Of Mann, said she got the idea when she heard local business Belle's Boutique was looking for a place to host events where they could sell their stock.
"I thought we should try it in the pub because trade is normally quite slow on a Tuesday. It is a bit like an Ann Summers' evening, except with hats and handbags instead of lingerie. Everyone has a look at the wares, has a few drinks and socialises," said Laura.
The previous event featuring handbags attracted 40 women and was hailed a resounding success. The next evening, which will also offer hats, is timed to allow women to stock up on accessories a few weeks before the Aintree Races take place. Laura hopes this evening will entice even more fashion savvy women to the pub.
"We have invited all our female customers and their friends. We are known as a good racing pub and this is great because it encourages women to get involved in racing as well. Plus, it makes an evening of nothing into an evening of money."
According to Laura, the evening will be held in the run up to any major events in the area. She added that customers are attracted by new ideas and pubs need to be innovative when battling the downturn.
"This is something a little bit different. It gives customers something to do on a cold rainy day and gives them a reason to stay. I think that is what customers are going for at the moment.
"Any pub will have to try hard at the moment and come up with new ideas. Even if they are a flop at least they are giving them a go."
This event is taking place at The Lady Of Mann, Liverpool on Thursday 26th February from 6 pm.
